Hydrangea White Diamonds™ Hydrangea paniculata ‘HYPMADI’ PPAF
Developed by Dr. Michael Dirr at the University of Georgia this paniculata is smaller and more manageable for a small garden or container than other paniculata’s. Flower panicles of full glistening white are held high on stiff upright branches that don’t flop all over the garden.
White Diamonds™ hydrangea had a humble beginning, planted in a red clay field near Athens, Georgia, the University of Georgia trial ground of noted plantsman, Dr. Michael Dirr. Planted with little to aid it except minimal irrigation, it withstood the exposure of a baking summer and a windswept winter. It proved equal to the challenge and it excelled in bloom.
The old PeeGee hydrangea (Hydrangea paniculata ‘Grandiflora’) bloomed in summer on trunks like small trees. Recognizing the need for smaller forms of this sun-loving hydrangea, Dr. Dirr began breeding and selecting more compact forms. We believe this one is a winner with compact, dark green foliage that has a leathery texture, ideal to withstand summer heat and drought. The white summer blooms are frothy bouquets that invite compliments, both outdoors and indoors in a vase.
White Diamonds™ is ideal for small gardens, large mixed containers, or for shrub borders where a 4 to 5 foot tall, summer-blooming shrub is needed. If you are looking for reliable, carefree summer bloom, you have found your plant.
